Smart Home & CCTV Installation in Bournemouth: Your FAQs
Updated: Oct 4
Smart home kit has moved from gadget territory to standard building work. Hardly a week goes by without a Bournemouth customer asking us to add a video doorbell while we're rewiring, or to sort out the Wi-Fi in a loft conversion before the plasterboard goes on. Some want lower heating bills, some want to see the drive from their phone, and plenty just want the router to stop being the most argued-about object in the house. These are the questions we get asked most, with straight answers and real numbers.

A bit of context first: we're a Dorset building firm, not a box-shifting alarm company. Our electricians handle smart home, CCTV and networking installs as part of bigger projects and as standalone jobs, everywhere from Westbourne flats to family homes in Southbourne and Winton.
What does a professionally installed CCTV system cost in Bournemouth?
For a wired four-camera system with a recorder, professionally installed and set up on your phone, we'd typically charge £950 to £1,700. Camera spec and cabling drive the difference. 4K cameras and long cable runs through a three-storey townhouse sit at the top of that range, while a compact two-camera setup covering the front door and drive comes in well under it.
A video doorbell supplied and fitted starts from around £180, and it costs less again if we add it to a job we're already doing at yours. Most four-camera installs take one to two days, including app setup and a proper walkthrough before we leave, so you're not left squinting at a manual.
Wired or wireless: which should you choose?
Wireless cameras are quick to fit and fine for a rental or a stopgap. They're also the ones we get called back about. Batteries need charging, and footage quality drops the moment your Wi-Fi wobbles. For anything you actually want to rely on, we fit wired: power and footage run down the same cable, so there's nothing to charge and nothing to drop off the network at 2am.
The part that separates a tidy install from a messy one is hiding the cabling. On period houses around Talbot Woods we run cables through lofts and voids so you don't see a single clip on the brickwork. That's the bit a good installer earns their money on, honestly.
Will smart heating and lighting work in an older house?
Almost always, yes, with a bit of planning. Thick Victorian walls do soak up wireless signal, which matters because most smart kit leans on your Wi-Fi (more on that below). As a guide to what we charge:
Smart thermostat, supplied and fitted: £180 to £420 depending on the model and your boiler.
Fully zoned smart heating with radiator valves and a hub: £360 to £950, driven mostly by how many radiators you have.
Whole-house package for a three-bed, covering lighting, heating, cameras, doorbell and alarm: £4,800 to £8,400 professionally installed.
One tip from jobs we've done around Charminster: if you're rewiring anyway, have the neutral wires and smart switches put in at the same time. Retrofitting them later means opening up walls twice and paying twice for the privilege.
Can you fix Wi-Fi dead spots for good?
Yes, and the fix that actually lasts is wired access points rather than a daisy-chain of plug-in boosters. We run data cable to the dead zones and mount slim ceiling units, so the whole house sits on one seamless network. For a typical three-bed with two wired access points you're looking at from around £700 installed; solid masonry walls and long cable runs push that up. We fit these on most garden office jobs too, because a building at the end of the garden almost never gets a usable signal from the house router.
Do I need planning permission for home CCTV?
In almost all domestic cases, no. What matters is where the cameras point: coverage should stay on your own property, not a neighbour's garden or windows. We angle and test every camera on install day so you're covered in both senses. Timewise, a doorbell or thermostat is an hour or two, a four-camera CCTV system is the one to two days mentioned above, and whole-home packages usually run two to five days depending on scope.
